The Lowdown: Singing! Dancing! Judaism!

Extremely queer-friendly, this shul is full of Upper West Side Jewish intellectuals, including a huge crowd of 20-35-year-olds looking for love along with their religion. There are monthly gay and lesbian pot-luck dinners following Friday night services, where you just might find that nice Jewish doctor to bring home to mamma.

The Lowdown: An eclectic shul in a borrowed space filled with faith and joy.

The first solely gay and lesbian synagogue in New York. This very eclectic congregation is led by Rabbi Sharon Klienbaum and filled with queer Jews and their loved ones from Reformed to Orthodox. CBST overflows with an extraordinary sense of community, particularly on the high holy days, when it rents out the Javits Center and invites every queer Jew to prayer.

The Lowdown: Safe haven for queer Catholics and their faith.

Most queers raised as Catholics call themselves "Recovering Catholics" after the coming out process and the realization that their church rejects them. DIGNITY/New York, the local chapter of a national group, bills itself as a GLBiTrans community that seeks to end injustice and oppression within the Catholic church. Most importantly, though, DIGNITY members keep their own faith alive by giving it a safe haven with like souls in the city.
